The habit of stroking her hair exposes the killer of the actress

ChinaIt took police four years to solve the mystery of the young actress’ death because heavy rain swept away much evidence and there were no witnesses.

On the morning of August 30, 2012, when it was raining heavily, the Fenggang District Police Department, Xunyi City, Guizhou Province received news that a young woman had been murdered in the corner of Phoenix Square. The victim died in a kneeling position, the body showing multiple stab wounds.

The police quickly identified the victim, whose surname was Cui, an actor from the art troupe of the Fenggang District Cultural Center. Young, beautiful, very famous in the area, often takes part in performances organized by artistic troupes, while also taking on the role of host for major events. The crime scene where she was murdered is just over 10 meters from the work unit.

As police removed surveillance cameras around the square, police discovered that Cui emerged from the neighboring building at around 10:26 a.m., 5 minutes before the murder, holding an umbrella and a bag over his shoulder. She walked along the edge of the square, and about 50 seconds after she passed the camera, three women holding umbrellas also passed. The camera also captured a blurry image of a man nearby, as if he was about to step out of the resort’s hut in the plaza.

After the preliminary investigation, the police denied the suspicions of three women and only left the suspected man in the surveillance video. Because the murder happened in the middle of the rain, there were no other witnesses in the square. Meanwhile, the video is very blurry, it is difficult to identify the man.

After careful analysis, investigators noticed that the man’s left hand was raised as if stroking his hair. His inappropriate clothing also caught the attention of the police. In late August, it was very hot in Fenggang, but the night before the crime, it suddenly turned cold, and the man was wearing a blazer and shorts, as if he had been waiting at the cabin since the night before.

On the third day after the murder, police found the victim’s bag in the fetid moat of an artificial lake behind the square. Police determined that the perpetrator was most likely familiar with the area surrounding the crime scene, knowing that the location had few passers-by.

The police found no traces of the victim’s bag, cell phone or other missing valuables, and the suspect’s motive is robbery.

The artificial lake area behind the plaza is a blind spot for surveillance cameras, and police can only gather data based on the location of the discarded bag and the suspect’s hypothetical escape route. They speculated that the perpetrator had a temporary motive for robbery and therefore investigated unemployed people and criminals in the area, but this line of investigation was fruitless.

In 2014, the Police Department of Xunyi City, Guizhou Province decided to re-investigate the case that had been deadlocked two years ago, focusing on the whereabouts of the victim.

Police investigated in detail the neighbors and households around the victim’s home and discovered that a neighbor with a child who had dropped out of school was often at home, but suddenly disappeared after Cui was killed, all the time not even after returned home. The person exhibiting this unusual behavior is Luu Hoan, who lives less than 100 meters from Thoi’s house. Two years ago, Hoan had just turned 18. After a murder, Hoan suddenly told his family that he wanted to work somewhere else.

Upon further investigation, the police found that after August 30, 2012, Hoan wrote many words on an online blog expressing his boredom and pessimism, as if he had suffered a major psychological attack.

In the pictures on the blog, Hoan is wearing a black and white striped short-sleeved T-shirt, much like the man in the surveillance video. In addition, a photo of Hoan dancing shows that he can use his left hand to raise his entire body, which also gives police a sense that his left hand is Hoan’s dominant hand, consistent with the movement he uses with his left hand caressing his hair video.

However, Hoan was commented on by teachers and family as being docile, often getting pocket money from her parents, and not having to spend so much that she had to rob.

At this point, the forensic team gathered evidence and traces on the victim’s body to conduct an investigation to confirm that the suspect was a male.

On June 13, 2016, a man named Luu Nghia in Phuong Cuong district got drunk, got into an argument with a table next to him, was arrested by police, took a DNA sample and entered it in the archives. Unexpectedly, this DNA sample showed a high similarity to the DNA sample from the tag on the victim’s white T-shirt.

Police determined that Liu Yi was related to the suspect who murdered actress Cui four years ago. Luu is a local extended family where police discovered Luu Giang, Nghia’s cousin, an idle man jailed for drug addiction whose motive for the murder was that he needed money to buy drugs.

When questioned, Giang always hid himself, had a hostile attitude, lost control many times, which made the police even more suspicious. However, the results of the DNA comparison showed that Giang was not a suspect, only showed a high degree of similarity.

Eventually, Giang confessed that he believed he had been arrested by the police because of his drug addiction, so he had an uncooperative attitude. Giang also provided information about his cousin Liu Huan, who suspected that Hoan was the culprit because he often liked to carry a knife when he went out. After the murder, Hoan immediately ran to Lishui, Zhejiang. The police also recognized Hoan as the subject of the investigation two years ago.

Police found the factory where Hoan worked in Taizhou, Zhejiang. They silently followed Hoan to find evidence to avoid “breaking the ropes in the forest”. Four years have passed, Hoan’s appearance has changed a lot, but he still speaks the Guizhou dialect. The police officers who followed Hoan observed that he raised his left hand to stroke his hair for about 2-3 seconds, the same movement as the man in the surveillance camera at the crime scene.

Hoan was immediately arrested by the police and escorted to Guizhou. The results of the DNA comparison showed that he was the wanted suspect.

Hoan testified on August 29, 2012, the day before the case, that he asked his girlfriend to go to a park near the square. His girlfriend suddenly reminded him that September 1st was her birthday. But Hoan has spent all his pocket money for the month and has no money to buy gifts for his girlfriend. He suddenly had an idea to rob.

That night, after saying goodbye to his girlfriend, Hoan began to search the square for the target of the crime, but never had the opportunity to act, he had to temporarily sleep in a cottage in the square for one night. The next morning Hoan saw Thoi, knew she was a famous actress, so he thought there would be a lot of money with her. Taking advantage of the rain when no one was around, he forced Cui into the corner of the square to rob, then murdered her in a panic.

After committing the crime, Hoan fled to his girlfriend’s hometown. When his girlfriend saw that he was in an unsafe mood and wrote negative words on the blog, he inquired about the matter, but did not report it to the police, instead running with him to work in Zhejiang, never to return to Fenggang.

After the confession, Hoan determined the crime scene and the place to dispose of the evidence, and confessed that he threw the victim’s cell phone and knife into the artificial lake during his escape.

Police drained the lake and dispatched hundreds of officers to search for a week and eventually found the victim’s gun and cell phone in waist-deep mud. By recovering the data, the police determined that it was the cellphone that Cui used in his murder.

Hoan was sentenced to death for the crime Deliberately killing, stealingand Hoan’s girlfriend was jailed for a cover-up.
