President Zelenskyy said 87 people were killed when a military base in northern Ukraine was attacked by Russia.
“87 victims, 87 bodies lie under the rubble in Desna,” Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said today in an online address at the World Economic Forum conference in Switzerland. He also urged countries to maximize economic sanctions against Russia and give Ukraine more weapons.
This is the biggest fatality for the Ukrainian military in an airstrike after nearly three months of conflict with Russia. The biggest casualty so far was a cruise missile attack on the International Security and Peace Center (IPSC) near the western Ukraine city of Lviv in mid-March, killing at least 35 people.
The Russian Defense Ministry has not commented on the information.
Desna is about 70 km north of the capital Kyiv, where a large training base of the Ukrainian army is located. Ukrainian units regained control of the area after Russian troops withdrew from the north to concentrate on the operation in the east. Desna health officials said May 17 the attack claimed the lives of at least eight people.
Russia launched a special military operation to “demilitarize and defascize Ukraine” on February 24. After nearly three months of fighting, fighting in the Donbass region escalated into a state of tension between Russia and Ukraine as peace talks stalled and both sides blamed each other.
