Carman Deck was executed by lethal injection on May 3rd.

Carman Deck, 56, was found dead in Bonne Terre City Jail. Missouri at 6:10 p.m. on May 3rd. A day earlier, the US Supreme Court and Gov. Mike Parson denied this death row inmate’s motion for a stay of execution, according to the Independent.

Deck was sentenced to death for the murder of an elderly couple during a 1996 home burglary. The death row inmate was sentenced to death, then reduced three times, and finally sentenced to death.

In his final message, Deck wrote, “I hope that one day there will be only peace in the world and people will learn to be kind and love one another.”

“We are all part of this journey through life, all connected. Please give love, show love and be loved!”.

Deck mumbled a few words in the execution room as he was injected with five grams of pentobarbital. The death row inmate exhaled a few times and then stopped breathing altogether. The whole process only takes a few seconds.

In many US states, including Missouri, shortages of execution poisons have forced the state to switch to pentobarbital, an anesthetic for animals but one that can be fatal in large doses.

The use of pentobarbital for execution is controversial in the United States due to the lack of scientific studies showing that pentobarbital helps prisoners die painlessly.

After the execution, Missouri Governor Mike Parson said: “Carman Deck committed appalling violence that resulted in the loss of two lives. Tonight justice was done.” Children and grandchildren of the two victims were also present at the execution.

Elizabeth Unger Carlyle, Deck’s attorney, said the execution was “unreasonable and immoral.”

“Carman Deck had a difficult life from a young age. A psychologist once said that Deck had no childhood. He was abused, neglected and should have been cleared of the charges,” attorney Carlyle said.

Missouri has been suffering from a toxin shortage since 2013.

Deck was sentenced to death in 1998, but the Missouri Supreme Court reversed the decision, saying the judge made a grave error in sentencing.

In 2005, the US Supreme Court sentenced Deck to death a second time, but the sentence was overturned also because of public opinion that Deck was treated unfairly for being tied up during the trial.

After Deck was sentenced to death for a third time in 2008, a judge overturned the decision because a key witness failed to appear at the trial during the sentencing process.

In October 2020, three judges of the 8th Circuit Circuit sentenced Deck to death. Attempts to get Deck to avoid the death penalty were ultimately unsuccessful, and the Supreme Court and the state governor denied his request for a reduction in his sentence.

Deck is friends with elderly couple James and Zelma Long’s grandson. Deck learned through a friend that the elderly couple kept the money in a safe at home.

In July 1996, Deck brought a gun to the couple’s home and was kindly invited by the two victims to enter the home. Upon entering the home, Deck drew a gun and demanded to open the safe, taking some money and many jewels.

As the two victims lay face down on the bed, Deck shot each of them twice in the head and then left. Deck then surrendered and honestly confessed to the authorities.
